  • T1N Mercedes Sprinter Van Maintenance - Dodge, Freightliner

TURBO RESONATOR REPLACEMENT The stock turbo resonator finally split open several years ago enough to start leaking oil. I replaced it with an aftermarket Dorman brand resonator that was recommended as a stronger alternative. What I missed though is that the o-ring that comes with the Dorman part is crap and will fail and leak within a few years, and that is exactly what happened. The Mercedes brand o-ring is said to be superior. O-ring discussion Good o-ring - Mercedes P/N 013 997 84 45 Someone measured the stock Mercedes o-ring 1.7" ID, 2.1" OD and 0.2" Width Those measurements coincide with a #327 o-ring. Why not use a quad seal (X) o-ring? They offer superior sealing in many ways to a standard o ring. Chemical-Resistant Viton® Fluoroelastomer O-Ring, X-Profile, 3/16 Fractional Width, Dash Number 327 AUXILIARY ELECTRIC COOLANT PUMP This pump runs all the time, and the brushes wear out within about 2 years. A brushless motor version would last longer. Thread discussing brushless options This brushless Bosch coolant pump can be used. It will need to be supported differently in the engine bay due to larger body diameter. Connector for Bosch brushless pump Since the connector is different, and I cannot find a mating connector for the old pump, I may hack the connector part off the old pump, and solder that to the wire leads that come with the new connector. FUEL LEAKING FROM HOSES AT HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP There are 2 very short hoses attached to the high-pressure fuel pump. Mine were leaking diesel fuel onto the motor, quite a bit at some point. Squeezing the stock crimped on hose clamps temporarily stopped the leak, but I knew that these hoses would need to be replaced. 13-15mm fuel injection style hose clamps are needed to replace the crimped-on hose clamps that aren't reusable. WHERE TO BUY 13-15mm Hose Clamps TRANSMISSION SERVICE The transmission will last longer if the fluid and filters are changed every 40-60k miles or so. The original T1N MB NAG1 transmission service interval was once at 80,000 miles and done. Of course that proved to be very optimistic. I buy the kits from EuroParts-SD.com either the FUCHS OEM fluid or the PENTOSIN fluid (which is supposedly newer tech and better...) The kits come with the replacement gasket and filter. Something else that needs to be serviced occasionally is the transmission electrical connector. It is prone to leaking, although the newer revisions are improved over the older leaky ones. SERPENTINE BELT IDLER PULLEYS The serpentine belt idler pulleys (bearings) will eventually wear out. For me that seems to be about 100k miles. They start to make a racket when it's cold in winter. The idler pulley on the tensioner can be replaced without replacing the whole tensioner. The OEM setup uses one grooved and one smooth pulley. Europarts-SD recommends using 2 grooved pulleys. Buy 2 of these pulleys. Part Number: 000 202 09 19 This is the serpentine belt tensioner pulley. Buy 1 of these. Part Number: 38018 TENSIONER PULLEY REPLACE ENGINE AIR FILTER I've been using the HENGST engine air filters, and all has worked well so far. Part Number: 003 094 83 04-HENGST REPLACE CABIN AIR FILTER I use the HENGST cabin air filter. So far so good. Part Number: 901 830 04 18-HENGST OIL LEAKING FROM UNDER ENGINE COVER FUSES ATTACHED TO BATTERY There's a small fuse box attached to the battery with several high current fuses. The type of fuse used here is a MIDI fuse. The bolt hole distance is 30mm. I haven't had any of these fuses blow, but it's a good idea to have some on hand in case I do something stupid, and there's one empty slot that I intend to use for the starter battery ch WHERE TO BUY MIDI Fuse Multipack REPLACEMENT AIR VENT GRILL Read this post about how to replace the AC air vents with better ball style vents. TROUBLESHOOTING These are some of the issues I've had that I was able to repair. Engine stalling when coming to a stop Engine would cut off when warmed up and coming to a stop like at a light or stop sign. Letting the engine sit off for a few minutes before trying to restart would get it working. The problem continued to worsen to the point where it would take much longer to start again, and wouldn't start at all from cold. The solution was to replace the crankshaft sensor in the engine. This permanently solved the problem. Transmission won't shift above 2nd or 3rd gear. The solution to this was to replace the solenoid valve PCB inside the transmission. The sensors had metal built up on the surface. Cleaning it may have worked, but the replacement part was not too expensive. Coolant leaking from the driver's side of the engine. This was a bad oil cooler block. Replacing it and the gasket fixed the prob

  • Best Air Filter For 3D Printer - HEPA + Activated Carbon For Fumes, VOC, and Particulates

Filament and Resin 3D printers need good air filtration, especially when printing certain materials. 3D printer users have documented detrimental effects to their health and becoming sick from being exposed to 3D printer fumes. In most cases, these were long-term exposures when spending a lot of time in the same space as the 3D printer. There aren't any particularly good commercially available consumer filtration systems designed for 3D printing. Most are large and expensive. So let's make one using a 3D printer and an off-the-shelf home HEPA air filter. AROEVE Air Purifiers for Home, MK01 HEPA only (no carbon) + Large filter surface area + Small form factor - 6.1 x 6.1 x 9.7 inches + Cheap <$50 - Controls in the center of the exhaust make it difficult to add a duct. AROEVE MK01 & MK06 Air Filter FULMINARE H13 True HEPA Air Filter HEPA (claims to have activated carbon also?) + Large filter surface area + Small form factor - 5.71 x 5.71 x 7.88 inches + The bottom comes off to remove the air filter. This would be easy to 3D print a hose adapter for it. Tape over the holes on the outside. + Cheap <$40 - Controls in the center of the exhaust make it difficult to add a duct. FULMINARE PU-P05 Air Purifiers Replacement for H13 Air purifiers LEVOIT Air Purifier LV-H128 HEPA and mesh carbon + Small form factor - 6.69"D x 6.69"W x 10.43"H + Easy to design 3D printed adapters for it + Simple non-electronic switch. Will turn back on after a power outage. + Switch is on the side. Easy to add a duct to the exhaust on top. + Easy to add an activated carbon media holder on top. + Cheap < $40 + Dual filters. Only one at a time needs to be used for this low flow requirement, so this will double the filter life. - Small filter surface area Replacement Filter - LV-H126-RF LEVOIT Air Purifiers LV-H126 + HEPA and mesh carbon + Small box form factor - 6.8"D x 9.65"W x 7.9"H + Easy to design 3D printed adapters for it + Simple non-electronic switch. Will turn back on after a power outage. + Cheap < $30 - Small filter surface area Replacement Filter - LV-H126-RF Manual VEWIOR Air Purifiers for Home, HEPA Air Purifiers for Large Room up to 600 sq.ft PureZone™ Mini Portable Air Purifier - Cordless True HEPA Filter Small filter good for small enclosure GoveeLife Mini Air Purifier for Bedroom, HEPA Smart Filter Air Purifier with App Controls are in the way of filter cartridge, but it can be controlled from app. ACTIVATED CARBON Thermally Activated Carbon vs Acid Washed Carbon The activated carbon used for 3D printing air filtration must be NON-acid washed. Acid-washed carbon will rust the metal parts in your printer and ruin it. Most activated carbon is acid-washed. If it doesn't specify, it's probably acid-washed. This page has some good info about acid-free activated carbon for 3D printing and also recommends low ash carbon, which coconut carbon has naturally low ash content. Here's some thermally activated carbon for 3D printer use sold on Amazon. Unfortunately, it's granule carbon, which means you need a finer mesh to contain it in the filter. A mesh carbon filter works well to contain the granular carbon. A window screen mesh also works ok, allowing only a few small particles to pass. The activated carbon filter cartridge needs to be downstream of the HEPA filter. The cleaner the air flowing through the HEPA filter, the longer the effective lifespan. The purpose of the activated carbon is to remove VOCs and trap micro particulates. The HEPA filter acts like a prefilter for the carbon. • 1UP USA Bike Rack Long-term Review, Mods and Improvements

I've owned the 1UP USA bike rack for almost 10 years, and it has been an excellent bike rack. The best bike rack I've ever had. The best part is that since there are no plastic parts, nothing is breaking down in the sun, and there's also no steel to rust. Nothing on this rack has broken or worn. Everything works like new. The aluminum still looks great. It stays on the back of my van, outdoors all year long, and grtd used all the time. Modifications Quick Adjust, Toolless, Better Centering Tire Holders I designed and 3D printed these quick-adjust, toolless tire holders for the 1UP USA bike rack. They also center the tire better and keep the bike more secure. I've used them since installing the rack and they are awesome and have held up well. Handle For Lowering Fat Bike Adapter To get the quick adjust modification I made to work with the wider fat bike adapter, I had to buy longer bolts. Because of the tool-less nut on the outside, the bolt has to be longer than the one that comes with the kit. A 6.5in long bolt is perfect. The fat bike adapter kit adds 1.75in of extra width. The bolts specs: 5/16-18 Stock 1UP bolt length (non-fat tire version) = 5.25in Fatbike adapter bolt length as supplied by 1UP = 6in Bolt length needed for quick adjust mod = 6.5in Brake, Turn Signal, Taillight Bar I added this brake and turn signal taillight bar to the back of the rack and plugged it into the trailer connector. This increases the brake and turn signal visibility a lot, because the bike wheels block the tail lights. Where To Buy Tail Light Bar The light bar is encased in an aluminum housing and pretty strong on its own. It comes with foam mounting tape on the back, which I used to mount it to a half height piece of 80/20 t slot extrusion (0.5in x 1in) to give it a strong base to attach to and make it easier to attach to the rack by using the T slot hardware. I noticed that people keep their distance more with this light bar installed. Swing Out I use the KUAT PIVOT 2 swing out adapter to swing the bikes away from the van to open the rear doors. They have a passenger side and driver side option. I have the passengers side because I bought it before the drivers side was available. I wish I had the driver's side, because the most traveled path is between the passengers side sliding door and rear door, and whenever we camp, we face the passengers side door towards the campsite, which leaves us walking around the bikes all the time. The downside to the drivers side option is that if you are parked on the street, it swings the bike into the road. • MICRO DNC 2 CNC Drip Feed Controller | USB to RS232 |

The stock memory in a HAAS CNC machine pre-2007 or so is only 1MB (however there is 16MB onboard, but it is locked). You can pay $$$$ to unlock the 16MB. The only way to load files is to use the floppy drive, or over RS232 serial. The floppy drive has a limited capacity and the file still needs to be copied over to the machine to run, taking up precious memory space. I purchased the Micro DNC 2, because it allows you to upload files (no size limit) from a USB key to the HAAS CNC through RS232. If the file is too large to upload in memory, it can drip-feed the file over RS232. So far it has worked great. Here are some videos about using it: ▼ WHERE TO BUY: ▶ MICRO DNC 2 on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3EWgr7T ▶ MICRO DNC 2 on eBay: https://ebay.us/AZUwtm or https://ebay.us/IPwmfl The MICRO DNC 2 has been working great so far, but suddenly it was saying that there's "No System Disk", which means that it was no longer recognizing the internal micro SD card. Watch how I fixed that issue: The HAAS TM-1 from 2005 was equipped with a floppy drive and only 1mb of memory. I needed an easier way to upload programs (via USB or WIFI) and storage for larger programs (drip feed). The MICRO DNC 2 looked like the perfect solution to solve both of those problems. Let's take a closer look. The Micro DNC 2 arrived well-packaged. I was only able to find this product shipped from Vietnam, so it must be a Vietnamese product. It is now also available on Amazon with quick shipping. It includes a power adapter and a serial cable, both of which had cords too short to reach the front panel from the connections on the rear of the CNC mill. • Self Cleaning GoPro Lens

There are situations where it would be nice to have a self-cleaning GoPro lens like any time water or schmoo can splash on a GoPro camera lens. In my situation, I use the GoPro inside a milling machine, and coolant will spray onto the lens. The lens spins on a central motorized axis. It can spin up to 10,000 rpm. The seal between the spinning lens and the housing is a labyrinth-type seal. Positive air pressure is used to keep out liquids, dust, etc. A compressed air line is connected to the camera body housing. The larger roto-clear window also uses compressed air to keep out liquids and debris. • Upgrade Dash Air Vents For T1N Sprinter Van 2001-2006 Replace Fragile Vent Grills

The T1N Mercedes / Dodge / Freightliner Sprinter van dash air vents are notoriously horrible. I haven't bothered replacing the dash covers because I'm concerned that the new ones will break just as easily. I was searching for Android Auto options and came across this Sprinter Forums post where someone was showing their setup, and had interesting swivel vents. They said that they 3D printed the adapters for the swivel vents, and had to Dremel the vent out a little for it to fit. It could be made to look a little nicer. Since the airflow damper control is retained, you don't need vents that can close. I would prefer some simple ball vents that have less airflow obstruction for less noise, like these. WHERE TO BUY BALL STYLE AIR VENTS I will see if the ball vent housing will fit inside the vent without any dremeling mods. If not, I could design the new vent cover to incorporate only the ball and ditch the housing that it comes with to make it more form fitting. I expect the vent to stick out a bit from the original level of the dash. TO BE CONTINUED...
